Description:

This activity will review the current state of the art in glioblastoma treatment as well as explore new opportunities with targeted therapies and other novel modalities.

Learning Objectives:

Case #1: Glioblastoma: Background and Targeted Therapy – Timothy Cloughesy, MD

  1. Describe the etiology, clinical presentation and prognosis of patients with glioblastoma
  2. Summarize the diagnostic assessment of patients with suspected primary brain tumors
  3. Review emerging strategies for the use of targeted therapies for adult glioblastoma

Case #2: Treatment of Newly Diagnosed Glioblastoma – Patrick Wen, MD

  1. Summarize current state of the art treatment in adult glioblastoma, including the role of surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and targeted therapy in initial and recurrent disease
  2. Describe the significance of O6-methylguanine-DNA-methyltransferase (MGMT) over expression in the treatment of GBM
  3. Review emerging strategies for the use of targeted therapies for adult glioblastoma

Case  #3: Glioblastoma: Novel Approaches – Ingo Mellinghoff, MD

  1. Discuss current experience with kinase inhibitors for various types of cancer, including the genetic basis for drug response and drug resistance
  2. Discuss genetic alterations and potential drug targets in glioblastoma
  3. Review emerging strategies for adult glioblastoma including targeted therapies and genomic profiling
Target Audience:

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and neurosurgeons who treat patients with glioblastoma.
